What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a laser — an intense, pulsating beam of light — to remove unwanted hair.
During laser hair removal, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth. The lasers target is the color or melanin in the hair. The darker the hair color, the better results you can expect to have. So unfortunately, laser hair removal isn't generally effective for white, gray, light red or blond hair because the laser can't "see" the lighter hair.
Why have Laser Hair Removal?
Most cases, Laser hair removal is used to reduce unwanted hair. Not having to shave can save you a lot of time and even money in the long run. Common areas that we treat are: legs, underarms, upper lip, cheeks, chin, bikini line, brazilian bikini, full arms and mens half or full back. However, it's possible to treat unwanted hair in nearly any area!
How do I prepare for my treatment?
We always give the best pre and post information with every treatment, but here are some great tips that we love:
- Stay out of the sun. A tan increases the risk of side effects, such as skin lightening. If you have a tan — either from sun exposure or sunless tanning products — wait until the tan fades completely before undergoing laser hair removal.
- Avoid plucking, waxing and electrolysis. These hair removal methods can disturb the hair follicle and interfere with laser hair removal.Shaving is the only method of hair removal during LHR treatments, as not to interfere with the timing of the regrowth process.
- Have the area to be treated shaved either the day of or day before. unlike waxing, one of the best parts of LHR is no need to grow your hair out!
How many LHR treatments will I need?
Typically it will require 6 treatments to permanently reduce the number of regrowing hairs by about 80%, some need as many as 12. Adherence to the recommended treatment schedule will maximize your results. We generally treat every 4-8 weeks for different areas of the body. Additional treatments will be needed if you want to reduce the small number of remaining follicles . You do need“touch-up” treatments of 2-4 treatments a year for best results. The face is a particularly stubborn area for women as hormones and other factors can cause continued hair growth after multiple treatments. Hormones, pregnancy, medications and health issues can cause hair to stimulate and grow back. If this happens, a full session start up is needed to retreat the areas effected.
What happens after my Treatment?
Your skin should look and feel fine after your treatment. A light amount of heat is normal. You may also see tiny red bumps at the where LHR was preformed for a few hours after your treatment – this is called a follicular response, and completely normal. In the unlikely event that you feel skin irritation, you may apply aloe vera gel or cool compresses. Avoid applying astringents or other harsh chemicals to the treated skin until any sensitivity has resolved.
